Natural parks and protected areas
This territory is home to some of the richest and best preserved natural spaces in Spain. The natural parks and protected areas you will find here are perfect for those seeking a deep connection with nature.
Cap de Creus is a maritime-terrestrial natural park that summarises the natural wealth of the Alt Empordà. Since it was declared a natural park in 1998, it has been considered one of the largest areas of ecological and scenic interest in Catalonia, with geological formations of incomparable beauty and unique endemic fauna. The park is home to marine ecosystems, Mediterranean vegetation and native species, making it an essential destination for nature lovers.
Aiguamolls de l'Empordà are one of the most important wetlands in the Mediterranean, and are located mainly in the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries. This natural space is a benchmark for the coexistence of water, land and fauna, especially the nearly 350 species of birds, many of which are protected. This place is also home to vegetation of great biological and landscape value, which combines rice plantations and pasture areas.
Sierra de la Albera, the easternmost section of the Pyrenees, is considered a Natural Site of National Interest. This mountain range offers a unique combination of central European vegetation, such as beech and oak forests, in the western sector, and Mediterranean vegetation, with cork oak forests, in the eastern sector. In addition, it is home to endemic animal species of great interest, such as the Mediterranean tortoise, whose population is protected in Garriguella through a reproduction centre dedicated to the conservation of the species.
The three parks and protected areas offer optimal routes for visitors, where you can enjoy landscapes with great chromatic impact and unique biodiversity.
